Brand mentions in AI search rise and fall with how widely a company is covered, and the window to enter an answer is narrowing. Two studies published this week show both. Ahrefs found that mentions across many ordinary pages track AI answers at least as closely as press coverage. AirOps found that AI shortlists shrank from 7.7 brands to 5.3 this year.

For a crypto, fintech or AI launch, that changes what coverage needs to achieve after announcement week.

The two studies in numbers

Finding Result Source
Brands named per AI answer, all sectors 7.7 in January, 5.3 in September 2026 AirOps
Brands named per AI answer, banking 7.6 in January, 4.7 in September 2026 AirOps
Share of a question’s answers naming a brand first seen there in Q3 3.6%, against 36.7% for brands already named AirOps
Brand still named in September when January’s answer cited its site plus two or more other sites 77.2%, against 40.7% with no cited page naming it AirOps
Correlation of webpage mentions with AI mentions 0.70 Ahrefs
Correlation of news article mentions with AI mentions 0.67 Ahrefs
Correlation of Reddit mentions with AI mentions 0.75 Ahrefs
AI mentions for a brand with 10x more webpage mentions about 3.7x Ahrefs

Ahrefs compared 10,000 US brands with their unbranded AI mentions across 260 million prompts in AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. AirOps followed the same non-branded buyer questions on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode from January to September 2026.

AI shortlists are getting shorter

AirOps tracked hundreds of thousands of buyer questions for nine months. In January, the average answer named 7.7 brands. By September it named 5.3, a drop of about 31%, and every engine and sector moved the same way. Banking fell further, from 7.6 brands per answer to 4.7.

Late arrivals get little room. On the same questions, brands first named in the third quarter appeared in 3.6% of that question’s answers. Brands already named in the first half of the year appeared in 36.7%. On 62.8% of questions, the brand named most in January and February was still on top in September.

In banking, the average answer now names fewer than five brands.

How WIRE.AD does it. AI visibility is an add-on to any campaign. Before launch, WIRE.AD records which brands AI answers name for the questions the client’s buyers ask. After the placements go live, the same questions are asked again and the report shows the before and after.

The spread of coverage tracks AI answers

Ahrefs scored seven mention types against AI visibility using Spearman correlation, where 1 means two rankings line up exactly. Webpage mentions scored 0.70. News article mentions scored 0.67. Weighting mentions by the traffic of the page that carried them changed nothing: also 0.70.

That result matters for how a budget is split. A mention on a low-traffic page appeared to count about as much as one on a high-traffic page, and press coverage did not outscore mentions across the wider web. The Ahrefs team suspects it comes down to how widely a brand is talked about, more than who is talking.

Where more coverage goes with more AI mentions, the step is small. A brand with 10 times more webpage mentions typically gets about 3.7 times more AI mentions, and Ahrefs puts the jump from 1,000 to 10,000 pages at roughly 200 extra AI mentions. ChatGPT was the least tied to off-site mentions of the three platforms. Brand size explains part of the pattern, but within every band of brand search volume, more webpage mentions still went with more AI mentions.

How WIRE.AD does it. Each package spreads one announcement across several outlets chosen for the client’s vertical, with a version of the release written for each desk. The report lists every placement with its URL and its label, editorial or sponsored, so the client sees exactly where the brand now appears.

Brands backed by their own page and outside sources stayed named

AirOps took every brand named in a January answer and checked the same question in September. When January’s answer cited the brand’s own site plus two or more other sites that named it, 77.2% of those brands were still named. When no cited page named the brand, 40.7% were.

The owned half of that pairing shows up in our own data too. In the WIRE.AD Release Pickup Study, 59.3% of citations in answers to “What did [company] announce?” pointed to the company’s own website. So a launch needs both: the full announcement on the company’s newsroom, and independent pages that say the same thing in their own words.

How WIRE.AD does it. The facts in every outlet version are confirmed with the client before anything goes live, so the newsroom post and each independent page carry the same names, numbers and claims.

Reddit leads the correlation, on Reddit’s terms

Reddit threads that rank in Google had the strongest link of all seven types, at 0.75. A brand with 10 times more Reddit mentions tends to get about 5.5 times more AI mentions. The median brand in the Ahrefs sample had 8 Reddit threads naming it, and 29% had none.

AirOps adds a timing detail. 75.2% of the Reddit threads AI search cited were more than six months old, and 4.3% were less than 30 days old. Threads older than two years were cited again for the same question four weeks later 25.8% of the time, against 13.1% for threads under a month old.

Reddit’s Rule 2 asks users to “participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest” and bans content manipulation, and enforcement ranges from content removal to account suspension. A founder who answers real questions from a disclosed account, within each subreddit’s self-promotion rules, adds to the older threads AI search tends to cite. Results take months.

How to read these numbers

Both reports come from companies that sell AI search tools. Both describe correlation, and the Ahrefs sample covers US brands only. The direction still matches across the two datasets and our own study, which is why we treat it as this week’s signal for launch planning.

What to do before the next launch

  • Ask the category questions your buyers ask in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode now, without your company name in the question, and write down which brands each answer names.
  • Plan coverage across several relevant outlets in your vertical, with a version for each, alongside any single large placement.
  • Publish the full announcement on your own newsroom the day it goes out.
  • Give the news a number journalists can quote, such as a funding amount or usage figure. Funding and data releases earned articles most often in our pickup study.
  • If your buyers are on Reddit, take part openly from a disclosed account, within each community’s rules, and expect months.
  • Measure again 4 to 8 weeks after launch with the same questions, then keep tracking, since the change builds over months.
